The crime occurred around 9 p.m. Wednesday at Bank of America on Independence Boulevard, according to the Mount Airy Police Department. It is classified as a “strong-arm” robbery attempt, with no gun or other weapon involved.
Police records indicate that two employees of Hibbett Sports in Mayberry Mall were making an after-hours deposit at the bank when they were approached by two males wearing masks. No other description of the pair was given.
Hibbett Sports employee Chancey Montana Simmons, 19, of Ararat, advised that one of the men grabbed her arm as she was making the deposit. However, no funds were reported stolen and she wasn’t injured.
Along with investigating the incident, Mount Airy police have issued a citywide warning to local businesses through an email alert system that notifies the community of possible crime trends.
It advises merchants and others taking money to night depositories to be mindful of the potential for robbery and aware of their surroundings at all times.
If suspicious persons or vehicles are seen in the vicinity upon arriving, authorities say the best recourse is to remain in the vehicle and contact the police department.
