I am writing to tell you of a horrible experience I had at the Surry County Animal Shelter, managed by Samantha Berryman, Nancy Kinder and Mr. Gillespie. Nancy Kinder told me that if I brought my dog to the shelter it would surely be adopted because it was a 3 year old full blood with papers and had been fixed and was well mannered. I took my dog over there so they could find her a new home because I had gotten too old for such a large dog. I gave the dog, on a chain, to Nancy and signed permission for them to find my dog a home. The dog was taken away from me and pulled down a hall and they came back and slung her chain on the floor. I said I would like to have her collar. They said they would get that to me later. Samantha Berryman told me the dog was not fit to be in society. She snapped at people. I decided I wanted my dog back. I called my vet. My vet said he had seen no aggression in the dog. He got on the phone trying to get the dog for me. Linda Mooney or Surry Animal Rescue was on the Bassett Hound Rescue trying to get the dog back. I called later and they told me my dog had been euthanized the day I brought it in. The next day Nancy Kinder called me and told me she was so sorry the dog had been put to sleep and that she had nothing to do with it.
I am submitting this letter to the editor because I don’t want to see anything like this happen to anyone else’s beloved pet.

Surry County Animal Shelter is not a fit facility for an animal. They can not house the animals that they have and the employees there seem to only want to be there for a pay chec. There is no love for the animals. I have friends that work for the MAPD that would love to be in that facility and that LOVE animals. I think that surry co should look into who that have placed in this shelter nd reconcider their tyes that bind. Animals are not for abuse they are for companionship and lots can be used for medical purposes. But never given the chance to make a difference is totally unfair.
