ELKIN — The Mount Airy girls downed Elkin Friday, defeating the Buckin’ Elks handily, 41-22.

The Granite Bears turned the ball over only 8 times in the game, and used a strong defensive performance to offset a relatively poor shooting night.

Mount Airy coach Howard Mayo said he was pleased with the Bears defensive effort but said he thinks his teams needs to work to knock down easy shots.

We played really well defensively,” Mayo said. “To keep someone to 22 points you’ve got to be pleased but we missed a lot of makeable shots that we have to get better at. But it was a conference win so we will definitely take it.”

Mount Airy played without freshman starting point guard Jordan Hiatt, who went down Tuesday against Patrick County with an ankle injury.

Mayo said the team will know more about Hiatt’s condition sometime next week, but added that he feels comfortable with the ability of the Bears remaining players to not hurt for a solid ball handler.

“I am confident we can handle it,” he said. “We are seeing different people step up. The thing about our team is we all can handle the ball.”

Seniors Maggie McKee (12 points) and Ellie Case (11 points) led the Bears offensively, followed by Andria Leonard with 8.

Jordan Eldridge had 13 to lead Elkin in the loss.

WEST JEFFERSON — The North Surry girls lost a tough match up with MVC 2-A Conference opponent Ashe Co. Friday, falling to the Huskies 46-38.

The Greyhounds committed 25 turnovers and gave up 15 offensive rebounds in the loss, statistics coach Shane Slate said was the obvious difference in the game.

Ashe also had 12 more field goal attempts than North Surry, along with shooting 14 more free throws.

Slate said with the poor ball control and lack of defensive rebounding, his team was fortunate to be in a position to win the game in the final period.

Lindsey Payne paced North Surry with 10 points and was followed by Emily Culler with 7 points and Kara Hodges with 6.

Shelly Barker led Ashe County with 15 points in the win.

North Surry will face Forbush Tuesday.
