WINSTON-SALEM — The East Surry volleyball team carried Monday’s momentum over to Tuesday for a 3-0 sweep of Atkins.

After topping rival West Stokes to start the week, the Lady Cardinals (5-3, 1-0) cruised in every set of the Northwest Conference opener, winning with final scores of 25-6, 25-6 and 25-9.

Cameron Sloop, Bethany Clayton, Alyssa Jessup and Sarah Marion led East Surry’s attack at the net. The four combined to register 21 kills, led by Sloop with eight.

Clayton also chipped in 12 assists, but it was Sami Marion who led the Cardinals with 14. Coach Caleb Gilley plays two setters at a time, and Tuesday’s match was a perfect example of how to execute his game plan.

Bryce Smith was a wall on the back line for the Cardinals with 15 digs. She also led the team with four aces, followed by Jessup with three.

East Surry will look to win its third match in a row on Thursday with a trip to Walkertown.
