Firefighters battle a blaze at Bannertown Baptist Church Sunday evening. The fire broke out about 6:30 p.m. and had engulfed a sanctuary by 8 p.m.

A tower of smoke and the glow of flames can be seen from South Main Street on the back side of Bannertown Baptist Church as its old sanctuary burns Sunday night.

A fire broke out Sunday evening at Bannertown Baptist Church, engulfing the old sanctuary.

The call was dispatched for Mount Airy Fire Department at about 6:45 p.m., with other neighboring volunteer departments called in to assist with manpower and trucks.

More information will be provided as it comes available.
