OLIN — There have been plenty of victories for the East Surry Cardinals this fall, and last Saturday, Sept. 30, it was the turn of the East Surry Raiders.
The East Surry High School JROTC Raiders got up early that morning and traveled to North Iredell High School to compete in their annual Raider Meet. A Raider Meet is a competition to test your physical fitness and challenge your mind, consisting of five events, starting off with the Modified Army Physical Fitness Test (MAPFT) which is made up of two minutes of push-ups, sit-ups and a one-mile run, a team five-kilometer run, the rope bridge, a Humvee pull, and finally a litter carry. The rope bridge event consists of constructing a bridge from one pole to another pole placed 50 feet apart, and the team has to get all of its members across without any penalties (with no one touching the ground) in the fastest time.
The East Surry Raiders traveled with three teams (A, B, and C). The school’s “A” team placing first overall out of the 12 teams there. East Surry’s “A” team won the Rope Bridge, Litter Carry, and MAPFT competitions. The “B” team placed sixth out of the 12 teams, with its best event being the 50 yard Humvee pull (10,000 pounds), where they completed the event in 32 seconds to place third. Although “C” team did not compete in the meet, they cheered and supported their teammates no matter the outcome. At the end, the Raiders were very proud of the outcome. The “A” Team and “B” team captains were asked how they thought their respective teams did and what they thought they could have done better. Their responses were:
“As new team and this being our first Raider Meet, I think we did the best to our ability, even having a lot of freshmen learning the ropes on how we did things in Raiders. I personally think we could’ve worked better as a team on the litter course.”
“I personally think that we did the best we could have done at this meet. Everybody gave it their all, no one quit. I think what we need to work on is getting stronger as a team and communicating better.”
The Raiders would like to thank this season’s sponsors: Hodges Realty, Simmons Nissan, Pilot Mechanical, Pilot Rack, Cardinal Carports and New Atlantic Contracting. These businesses are providing the Raiders with food, transportation, apparel, equipment and meet entry fees.
The Raiders’ next meet will be at home on Saturday, November 4, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
