With the Labor Day weekend behind them, several local sports teams were looking forward to resuming play on Tuesday afternoon.
Until about 3:30 p.m., that is.
At about that time of the day, the skies over Mount Airy suddenly turned dark, and before long a thunderstorm had settled in over the Granite City and Surry County, making it impossible for any outdoor sporting activities to be played.
One casualty of the rain was the scheduled season opener for the Mount Airy Middle Granite Bears, who were slated to play at Starmount Middle School, but had to postpone the game. The team will now play on Thursday, with the game moved to Mount Airy Middle. A time for the makeup game has not been determined yet.
The high school Bears were supposed to host a Northwest Conference golf meet at Cross Creek Country Club, a soccer match with Surry Central, and a tennis match against rival Bishop McGuinness on Tuesday, but neither got under way before weather intervened. A make-up date for these matches has not been announced yet.
Undefeated Surry Central tennis was looking to stay that way on Tuesday with Western Piedmont 2A rival North Surry coming to Dobson. This match also was unable to start, but the teams agreed to try again on Thursday.
