PILOT MOUNTAIN — Six volleyball teams held a summer scrimmage at East Surry Thursday evening.

East Surry hosted Atkins, East Wilkes, Elkin, North Wilkes and Wilkes Central for both JV and varsity teams.

This was the second day of scrimmages this week as Surry Central and Central Davidson also took part on Wednesday.

All the coaches like the way East Surry does the scrimmages with a timer rather than going by score, said head coach Caleb Gilley.

Some schools have been coming here for three or four years, Gilley said. New teams that attend ask to come back.

The event is getting bigger, which is a good thing, he said. If the school had more court space then more schools could be invited. While Mount Airy has held scrimmages on both its high school and old junior high courts at the same time, East Surry’s fieldhouse gym isn’t set up to handle volleyball equipment.

Last year the Lady Cardinals went 24-5 overall and 11-1 in the Northwest Conference, edging Mount Airy at 10-2 for the regular season crown.

Bethany Clayton and Sarah Marion return as all-conference players. Two others made honorable mention in Maggie Holt and libero Morgan Smith.

Holt came in as a starter as a freshman, noted the coach. The team is expecting good things from her as a sophomore, but right now she is out with an injury.

Gilley said Maggie got some good news from the doctor this week, and the team is hoping to have her back on the court in a couple of weeks — in time for the regular season that starts Aug. 14 against Wilkes Central.

Open tryouts are on Monday, the coach said. Right now, if nothing changes, Gilley has split his 22 known players down the middle with 11 each on JV and varsity. Katelynn Markle is back as Gilley’s assistant coach.

As for how his team is performing this week, Gilley said, “I really like our serving and our defense.” Timing and hitting could use some work, but that will come with practice.
