PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry is finishing up a busy July with the last day of a volleyball camp.

The three-day camp has been open to any student in grades first through eighth.

Instructors will include East head coach Caleb Gilley, other Lady Cardinal coaches and high school players.

On Thursday, Gilley had the girls split up into two groups, with two nets running lengthwise over the basketball court. The participants, 49 in total, were divided by age and skill level.

The camp shows and teaches skills for serving, passing, hitting, setting and blocking. After skills are taught, games are incorporated into the sessions. To keep the atmosphere fun and engaging, Gilley planned competitions that lead to awards and a school-wide scavenger hunt.

This was the last of four camps at the high school this month.

Earlier, the boys and girls basketball teams hosted a youth camp July 10-12. Softball coach Randy Marion led a camp on July 15 and 22.

David Diamont and his staff led a football camp Monday and Tuesday of this week.
