The inclement weather on the horizon has officially washed away all of the local athletics supposed to take place this weekend.

Athletic directors pushed a variety of events from Friday to Thursday with the anticipation of the snow, sleet and freezing rain. However, local schools decided to play it safe, and have now postponed all events to next week and beyond.

The Western Piedmont Athletic Conference Swimming Championship, originally scheduled for Friday at the Armfield Center in Pilot Mountain before being pushed up to Thursday, will now take place on Wednesday, Jan. 27. The event will start at 6:15.

The Surry Central and West Stokes wrestling and basketball contests experienced similar dilemmas. The Golden Eagles and Wildcats will face off on the mats on Wednesday at 6:00. The winner of the wrestling match will improve to 4-1 in the WPAC and secure a berth in the dual-team state playoffs with a second-place finish in the conference.

Surry Central and West Stokes’ matchup on the hardwood will also take place on Wednesday.

North Surry also hoped to get its basketball game with Forbush played on Thursday, but the Hounds and Falcons have moved their conference battle to Wednesday night. It will be a huge contest for the Lady Hounds, who currently sit tied atop of the WPAC standings with Forbush.

The Falcons and Greyhounds also had a wrestling match scheduled for Thursday, but that away contest for North Surry has also moved to Wednesday night. The Greyhounds can clinch an outright conference championship with a victory on Wednesday.

Previous postponements forced East Surry wrestling to schedule a double-header with Bishop McGuinness and Atkins on Thursday, but the Cardinals match with the Villains and Camels has now been postponed and the schools are still working on setting up a makeup date.

The Mount Airy boys’ basketball team will have to wait a couple more days to try and extend its seven-game winning streak. Thursday’s home game against Winston-Salem Christian has been postponed, with no makeup date currently scheduled. The Granite Bears will return to the floor on Tuesday against North Stokes.

East Surry hoped to play its Friday night conference basketball game against North Stokes, but the Cardinals have already rescheduled that contest for Feb. 10.

The Northwest Conference Swimming Championship has also been moved to next week. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the local 1A schools will fill the pool at the Armfield Center on Tuesday at 4:15.
