HAYS — The Mount Airy wrestling team got its season off to a flying start on Tuesday in a tri-match with North Wilkes and Bunker Hill.
The Granite Bears came away with a 48-25 win over the Vikings, but Head Coach Cody Atkins was especially impressed with Mount Airy’s performance in its 43-36 victory against Bunker Hill.
“We knew going in (Bunker Hill) had a good record and they were a good team,” Atkins said. “Most of the teams they’ve played this season they destroyed, but the guys stepped up to the challenge in a really tough match.”
Forfeits in the 113 and 220 weight classes in both matches couldn’t derail Mount Airy on Tuesday. Riley Shaw (285-pound class), Cody Smith (195), Cameron Pack (182), Chris Butera (138) and Jacob Hogue (120) all went 2-0 on the afternoon.
Freshman Austin Tumbarello went 1-1 from the 145-pound division, but Atkins noted his victory in the Bunker Hill match was a key factor in the team’s overall win. Tumbarello defeated his opponent 7-4.
“It was a minor decision, but sometimes it can make a huge difference for the whole team. I was impressed with Austin,” Atkins said.
In the North Wilkes match, Atkins pointed out Shaw’s victory over Lance McManus. The Mount Airy coach credited assistant coach Joey Edwards for providing Shaw with a solid gameplan, and the senior wrestler executed it to perfection on the mat.
The Granite Bears will next be in action on Saturday at the Carroll County Invitational.
