DOBSON — No doubt, Surry Central’s tennis team gets more competition in intrasquad scrimmages, but it’s not often that a team gets to add two all-important conference wins to its ledger in one afternoon.
The state’s ninth-ranked 2A team kept its goal of a fifth straight Western Piedmont Athletic Conference title and a perfect regular season going on Thursday evening, sweeping conference foe Carver 9-0 and then 6-0 to improve to 11-0 and 7-0 in WPAC action.
The teams played a full match in the makeup of one that was postponed from earlier in the season, with the only difference being that the singles were played to a single set with eight games winning. The Lady Eagles’ lineup of Hannah Pardue, Sarah Wyble, Sarah Marion, Haily Robertson, Mamie Smith and Mattie Grace Snow all won their singles matches 8-0.
The doubles went the same way, with all three Surry Central doubles teams winning their matches without losing a single game.
The second match was concluded at the end of singles play, with all six Lady Eagles again prevailing 8-0. The doubles were not contested.
Central will face Forbush (7-4, 5-0 WPAC) in two matches next week that should decide if the Lady Eagles will get their fifth straight conference title. The teams will play on Monday in Dobson and on Tuesday in East Bend. Every other team in the conference has at least two league setbacks.
