ELKIN — The Mount Airy girls tennis team’s dominant run of sweeping every single match in 2016 came to an end on Monday, but the Lady Bears are still overpowering the opposition with an undefeated record.
Mount Airy improved to 4-0 this season with an 8-1 victory over Elkin on Monday. It is the second consecutive season in which the Lady Bears have opened with four consecutive wins to start the year.
The Bears started the match on Monday with three straight wins from No. 4 Maya Hicks, No. 1 Elizabeth Marion and No. 6 Elizabeth Bray. Hicks defeated Sydney Kelly 6-1, 6-1. Marion knocked off Mattie Timmerman 6-1, 6-0 and Bray earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Larkyn Nelson.
The lone defeat for Mount Airy came at the No. 3 singles position. Logan King rallied in the first set from down 2-3 to win 6-3, and held an early 2-1 lead in the second set against Emma Aldridge. However, King couldn’t hold on, losing the second set 6-3 and then falling in the decisive tiebreak 10-8.
The Lady Bears bounced back though and closed the singles portion of the match with two straight wins. No. 5 Lisa Omuro gave Mount Airy its fourth point of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bianca Soos.
No. 2 Bailey Jackson pushed aside a 6-4 loss in the first set to defeat Briana Dreyer 4-6, 6-1, 10-4. Jackson used an early 4-1 lead in the tiebreak to gain some early momentum and put some separation between herself and Dreyer.
Mount Airy also made things easy in the doubles competition. King and Bray started things off with an 8-0 clean sweep over Brooke Collins and Soos. Collins replaced Timmeman, who wasn’t able to play doubles due to an injury.
The No. 3 doubles pairing of Meredith Marion and Anna Kate Tucker earned an 8-3 win over Kelly and Nelson. The No. 1 pairing of Elizabeth Marion and Jackson finished the match with an 8-5 win over Dreyer and Aldridge.
Mount Airy will try to remain undefeated on Wednesday when the Lady Bears host West Stokes.
