PFAFFTOWN — Mount Airy tennis bounced back from a loss to East Surry to beat a 4A school.

The Lady Bears defeated Reagan 7-2 to improve to 12-1 overall and 9-0 against non-conference opponents.

“This was a good win over a very skilled 4A team,” said coach Rodney Pell.

The Bears clinched the match in singles play by taking five of the six spots.

Mount Airy got off to a slow start and was trailing midway through the first set on four courts, noted Pell. Then the girls got into a groove and ended up winning four of the six first sets.

Second seed Elizabeth Marion got the first point by defeating Madison Wright 6-4, 6-1.

Top seed Lauren Brintle beat Katie Schoulda 6-2, 6-2. Fifth seed Logan King won 6-2, 6-2 over Grace Anderson.

The other three matches would go to a third set.

Third seed Coleman Craddock dropped the first set 2-6, then turned it around to win 6-2 in the second. In the final frame, however, Craddock came up just a little short in a 9-11 loss to Caroline Richter.

Coleman trailed by three points for most of the tiebreaker, but cut it as close as one point before losing, said Pell.

Fourth seed Maya Hicks gave the Bears a 4-1 lead when she beat Aditi Pilani. Hicks lost 2-6 in the first set, but bounced back to win 6-4 in the second and 12-10 in the third.

Maya was losing 4-8 in the tiebreaker and won the next five to go ahead 9-8, said Pell. Pilani fought off two match points before Hicks closed it out.

That allowed sixth seed Elizabeth Bray to seal the deal with a win over Claire Carter. Bray won 6-3, but lost 2-6 in the second. She bounced back to win 11-9.

Bray was up 7-1 and cruising before Carter rallied with six straight points to make it close, the coach said. Carter went up and held a match point at 8-9 before Bray won the final three points.

In doubles, Brintle and Craddock won 8-3 over Schoulda/Wright. Marion and Hicks also won 8-3 over Pilani/Anderson.

King and Bray fell 4-8 against Andrea Strauss and Carissa Pozzi.

Next up for the Bears is a home match with Atkins on Monday. The Lady Camels won three matches against East Surry, while the Bears took two matches with East on Tuesday.
