RONDA — The Mount Airy girls’ tennis team experienced its closest match of the season on Monday, but the end result was still a comfortable victory.
It was the first time Mount Airy dropped more than two matches, but the Lady Bears’ (4-0) top five seeds all remained undefeated on the season as they defeated East Wilkes 6-3.
Top-seeded Lauren Brintle fell behind 5-2 in the first set, but the senior dominated the rest of the match. Brintle won 10 consecutive games to propel herself to a 7-5, 6-2 win.
Coach Rodney Pell said Lauren was feeling ill before the match, but showed a lot of heart to battle through the adversity.
Sophomore Elizabeth Marion continued her impressive start to the 2015 season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory on Monday. It was only the second time Marion lost a game four matches thus far.
After escaping on Thursday with a close victory, Coleman Craddock once again needed a third-set tiebreaker to settle her competition. The senior fell behind in the tie break 8-7, but scored the final three points to earn a 10-8 win.
Logan King, Mount Airy’s fifth seed, also needed a tiebreak on Monday. King won the first set 6-4, but dropped the second set 3-6. In the tiebreak, she led 5-4 before scoring five straight points to win 10-4.
For the second consecutive match, it was Maya Hicks who officially clinched a team victory for the Granite Bears. The sophomore’s 6-4, 6-3 win was the fifth triumph for Mount Airy on the afternoon.
Kari Hodges was the only Lady Cardinal to record a singles’ victory, defeating Elizabeth Bray 6-2, 6-4 in the sixth-seed matchup. This was Bray’s first seeded match this season.
In doubles, the Cards pulled out two of the three matches. Marion and Hicks were the lone Granite Bear duo to record a win, defeating Maddai Lester and Aiby Reeves 8-2.
Mount Airy’s next match will be at Forbush today.
