SPARTA — It was a race against the rain for the Mount Airy soccer team, and the Lady Bears got the job done.
Mount Airy and host Alleghany agreed to move the start time for their Wednesday evening match up to 4 p.m., in order to get the non-conference match into the books before rain would force a likely cancellation. In the event, the Lady Bears piled up the goals early and often for a 10-1 rout.
Five different players scored for Mount Airy (9-3-1 overall) in the contest, which was cut short by the mercy rule rather than bad weather. Head coach Will Hurley limited leading scorer Baylee Greenwood to not much more than 20 minutes of game action, but she managed to score four goals during that time along with an assist. Greenwood actually opened the Lady Bear assault early in the match, when she took a cross from Allie Sechrist and finished for the match’s first goal.
Before the match was called with Mount Airy in possession of a nine-goal lead, Jessica Bevard and Kora Ledezma had each scored twice, and Carly Grace and Samantha Stewart each had scored once. Nele Gorres had three assists, Ledezma two, and Bevard and Sechrist one each.
The Lady Bears will host Atkins on Friday evening.
