Baylee Greenwood’s scoring rampage during a five-match winning streak for the Mount Airy soccer team caught the attention of national media outlets.
The sophomore, who won all-conference honors as a freshman and who has played virtually every position of the field at some point during her career with the Lady Bears, was named as the North Carolina Player of the Week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and MaxPreps.com for the week of March 21-28.
The honor was announced in a press release issued by the NSCAA on Wednesday. Honorees from 12 different states were announced.
Greenwood scored 22 goals in a five-match stretch that began with a hat trick in a 6-0 victory over North Surry on March 10. She followed that up with another hat trick in a 5-4 loss to Surry Central four nights later, but then picked up the pace on March 16, when she scored five goals in a win over North Wilkes. This was the first performance within the scope of the Player of the Weak award.
On March 21, Greenwood added five more goals and an assist in a 9-0 shutout of Walkertown, then wrapped up the week with a rematch against North Wilkes, this time on the road. Mount Airy won by an identical 12-3 score, but this time, Greenwood went for a double hat trick and also had two assists. For the week, she scored 16 goals and had three assists in three matches.
On the day before the award was announced, she added two more goals and an assist in a 9-0 victory over North Stokes.
Greenwood has 34 goals and seven assists for the season. As a freshman, she scored 19 goals and posted seven assists to help the Lady Bears reach the second round of the 1A state playoffs.
