Mount Airy’s girls’ soccer team bounced back from its first loss of the 2017 season on Friday night, improving to 3-1-1 on the year with a 6-0 shutout of county rival North Surry.
The Lady Bears got a hat trick from sophomore Baylee Greenwood, who scored two goals from the field and also converted a penalty kick, while goalkeeper Samantha Stewart made 13 saves to keep the Lady Greyhounds off the board.
Olivia Malone, Jessica Bevard and Allie Sechrist had the other three goals for Mount Airy, while Greenwood was also credited with one assist.
“It was tough to play with that wind blowing, but we had a really good team effort,” said coach Will Hurley.
The Lady Bears had taken a tough 3-2 loss on the road at Elkin on Wednesday night. In that contest, Greenwood and Sechrist both scored goals, with Jaden Brinkley and Nele Gorres picking up the assists. Stewart made 27 saves in that contest.
Both teams will be back in action on Tuesday night. The Lady Bears will host Surry Central and the Lady Hounds will have Atkins as their guest.
