KING — Football season is fast approaching, and local teams are already preparing for the upcoming season. Last week, offensive and defensive linemen from East Surry and North Surry high schools headed down the road to compete in the sixth annual Lineman Challenge.

Head coach Jimmy Upchurch and his West Stokes coaching staff host this event every year. In addition to the Cardinals, Greyhounds and host Wildcats, other schools competing in the event included McMichael, Elkin and Starmount.

“It was a very successful evening,” Upchurch said. “The offensive and defensive lines are where we win ballgames and we like to do something for them every year. We’ve been taking our skill players to a lot of 7 on 7’s, but this gives our big boys a chance to shine. As far as I know, this is the only event for lineman in the state, other than a camp setting that some of our local high schools offer.”

Several events were contested over the course of the day, with winners in the above and under 200-pound category, and a Grand Champion in each event. The winners and the schools they represented included:

Rounding out the night, in a vie for bragging rights, each team lined up for the anticipated tug-of-war.

In the JV bracket, North Surry beat West Stokes ‘A’ and East Surry beat West Stokes ‘B’ to put both Surry County teams in the championship match. The Greyhounds overtook the Cardinals in the finals.

The varsity event had nine teams in the bracket with some of the schools having two teams.

North Surry ‘A’, West Stokes ‘A’, Elkin and North Surry ‘B’ all placed in the varsity semi-finals. The Wildcats beat North Surry ‘A’ in the semi-finals and then beat the Greyhounds ‘B’ team for the ultimate tug-of-war championship title.

“I was really impressed with our strength tonight,” said Upchurch. “Each team had some really good kids out here. The season is just around the corner and we can’t wait.”
