KERNERSVILLE — All four of the Surry County high schools were on display in the Northwest Invitational Cross Country Meet in Kernersville on Thursday.

In the girls’ competition, two local runners finished in the top five. Alma Rodriguez of North Surry came in second with Mount Airy’s Jo Snow right behind her in third. Rodriguez finished the course with a time of 21:20.54 while Snow clocked in at 21:44.41.

Two Surry Central runners, Miria Hernandez and Lora McDevitt, were the only other local competitors to finish in the top fifteen. They finished 13th and 14th, respectively.

Plenty of Surry Central runners starred on the boys’ side, allowing the Golden Eagles to finish second in the team competition and just two points behind Gray Stone Day for first place.

Daniel Alvarez led the Golden Eagles with a time of 17:28.76, good enough for third place overall. Elvis Vega and Danny Mata also finished in the top 10. Vega came in seventh with Mata finishing ninth.

Matthew Mayes of North Surry put in a terrific showing with a fourth-place time of 15:55.72. His Greyhounds team finished sixth out of 14 teams.
