GREENSBORO — One of the major reasons behind East Surry’s 20-5 baseball season and Northwest 1A Conference regular-season and tournament titles was the outstanding play of A.J. Wilson and Kain Kiser.
Fans of Cardinal baseball will have to wait several months to see the duo take to the diamond at Barry Hall Field again, but they will be in action this summer.
On Wednesday, Wilson and Kiser were named as two of the members of the 20-man team representing Region 7 at the Powerade State Games of North Carolina. The competition will be held from June 14-18 in Greensboro, using the facilities at UNC-Greensboro, Grimsley High School and War Memorial Stadium.
For State Games competition, eight teams are selected, one to represent each region of the state. Region 7 represents Ashe, Alleghany, Avery, Watauga, Wilkes, Surry, Yadkin, Davie, Iredell, Alexander, Catawba, Burke and Caldwell counties. Players interested in competing applied during the year, and were chosen by the coaching staff for their region. Region 7’s team is coached by Jack Moss of Forbush High School, assisted by Jeff Peck (Statesville), Mike Windish (Ashe Co.) and Jeff Burchett (Mooresville).
To date, the Region 7 roster is the only one to be announced. The others will be released no later than May 26. Several local athletes also applied to compete in other State Games sports, but selections in men’s and women’s soccer and softball have not yet been released.
