Hounds to play game at W-S Dash stadium

Staff Report

North Surry High School has been selected to play in the eighth annual Major Larry J. Bauguess, Jr. Memorial Baseball Game to be held at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem on Friday, March 25.

The game is an annual event hosted by Wilkes Central High School in honor of Bauguess, a 1989 Wilkes Central graduate who was killed while serving in Afghanistan on May 14, 2007. The next year, the school’s baseball field was renamed in his honor.

The Winston-Salem Dash, a minor-league affiliate of the Chicago White Sox who play in the Class A-Advanced Carolina League, host the game each year at their facility. Wilkes Central invites an opponent to play them in the game. Admission to the game is free, but donations to the Maj Larry J. Bauguess, Jr. Memorial Fund are appreciated. See http://www.majlarrybauguess.org/tournament.html for more information on the event.

The Greyhounds, who finished as 2-A West Regional runners-up last year, will be looking to make history. Wilkes Central is a perfect 6-0 in the event. The only time they haven’t won was in 2011, when two all-star teams of players from the Big South Conference played in the game.

The game is not the only amateur game that the Dash and BB&T Ballpark plan to host. More than 100 games are scheduled to take place at BB&T Ballpark this calendar year. The Dash will play 70 home games beginning April 14, while Winston-Salem State University has 24 games on its BB&T Ballpark slate, and nine other high school and youth games are scheduled, including the Bauguess Memorial contest.

Each amateur baseball player will have the thrill of a lifetime by playing in a professional baseball stadium and seeing their name and picture on BB&T Ballpark’s scoreboard. The program’s benefits extend beyond the game. All participating schools or organizations also purchased a specified number of tickets to Dash games in 2016, and these schools or organizations can resell the tickets to benefit their athletic departments or booster clubs.

“It is a thrill to see so many young baseball players’ eyes light up when they take the field at a professional baseball field,” Dash President Geoff Lassiter said. “Our amateur baseball program is one of our most fulfilling, because it is baseball in its purest form. Good luck to all of the participating teams.” Since the program’s creation in 2011, the Dash have welcomed almost 100 amateur teams to BB&T Ballpark.

Admission to games, if applicable, is mutually agreed upon by the two teams. All games are seven innings in length, unless otherwise noted. Here is the full 2016 schedule of high school and youth games (dates and times subject to change):
