Payne repeats as MACC champ

Staff Report

For the second year in a row, Scottie Payne rules the links at Mount Airy Country Club.

A total of 21 players entered MACC’s annual Men’s Club Championship over the weekend, with Payne shooting 70-74 — 144 over the two-day event to win the championship by three strokes over Jody Casstevens.

Payne, who led the event by two strokes after the first day with an opening round of 70 on the nine-hole, par-35, 3,075-yard golf course, and Casstevens were the only two golfers in the Championship Flight. Casstevens was seven shots better than anyone else other than Payne. The golfers played the entire course twice on each day in order to get a full 18 holes of golf in on each day.

Jerry Hall shot 80 on each day of the tournament in order to win the Super Seniors portion of the event.

Closest to the hole awards were given out at holes 3/12 and 7/16. Those were won by Ronnie Joyce and Hall, respectively.
