Cheyenne Kota, Jessi Marion, both East Surry High graduates, and Haley Hartman of Surry Community College’s volleyball team go on the attack in a match earlier this season. The Knights enjoyed a 24-win regular season and will enter the Region X Tournament in Greenville this weekend.

The Surry Community College volleyball team hit the road for the final week and a half of the regular season, winning one and losing two matches in their final tune-ups before this week’s Region X Tournament.

The Knights, who defeated Guilford Tech on their Oct. 21 Sophomore Night, started their season-ending road trip three days later with a match at Spartanburg Methodist College. Surry played well in three of the four sets, but narrowly lost two of them. Add in a second set where the team was completely off its game and lost 25-9, and the end result was a 27-25, 25-9, 22-25, 25-22 victory for the host Pioneers.

Kacie Markle was a force in the middle for Surry, with 12 kills and only three errors, but the Knights as a whole had just 29 kills, 18 less than their opponents. Haley Hartman added six, while Kaitlin Kidd and Morgan Hawks had four each.

Hawks added 23 assists and 16 digs, leading the team in the first category and tying Hartman in the latter. Markle added 15 digs and Cassie Palmer 11. The Knights had just two aces, one each from Cheyenne Kota and Jessi Marion.

Spartanburg (20-11) did an excellent job on the defensive end, with 116 digs in the match, including 35 from Rachel Mabry.

Later that day, Surry battled USC-Lancaster, who had traveled to Spartanburg for a tri-match against both teams. This one wasn’t as much of a challenge, as the Lancers are a first-year program and Surry handled them without great difficulty.

The regular season came to an end on Saturday evening at Lenoir Community College, in the team’s second straight match against a team called the Lancers. But the match was more than a curiosity, because the teams came in with identical 10-5 marks in Region X play, and the winner would be the third seed in the upcoming region tournament. Surry came up just a few points short of victory in a five-set loss, 17-25, 25-11, 25-23, 20-25, 15-12. The win for Lenoir (21-8) avenged a setback to Surry on Sept. 12, in which the Knights had downed the Lancers in four sets.

Surry enters this weekend’s Region X/District P Division II Tournament with an overall record of 24-8. The tournament will be held at the Charles Coburn Center in Greenville, with Pitt Community College as the host school. The winner of the Region X championship will take on the winners of the Region VIII and XXII tournaments for the District P title.
