PILOT MOUNTAIN — It was little more than a coronation ceremony, but it’s official now.
East Surry officially clinched the outright championship of the Northwest 1A Conference, honored seniors Bryce Smith, Cameron Sloop, Elise Hayes and Kendall Beck, and earned its 20th victory of the season on Thursday evening with an straight-set 3-0 victory over visiting Atkins High School.
The Lady Cardinals (20-4, 11-1 NW1A) had already locked up a share of the title and the conference’s No. 1 seed in their win over Mount Airy on Tuesday, but still needed to defeat the Lady Camels (5-17, 3-9 NW1A) to make it outright. That proved to be little problem for East Surry, which dominated from start to finish and was able to give every player on the roster some playing time.
East has won 12 of its last 13 matches this season, with the only setback coming last Saturday, when the team lost by two points in the fifth set against the fifth-ranked 2A team in the state, North Surry.
The Lady Cardinals, currently the eighth-ranked 1A team in the state according to MaxPreps.com, will begin the Northwest Conference tournament next week. East Surry is the three-time defending conference tournament champion, and have earned a bye in the first round as the regular-season champions of the seven-team league.
