Shoals Elementary earns national honor

PINNACLE — Shoals Elementary School was officially named a National Blue Ribbon School on Tuesday afternoon via the U.S. Department of Education’s USTREAM channel to faculty and staff assembled in the school media center.U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said Shoals was one of 337 National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2014 and is one of five schools earning the honor in North Carolina. The award is based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

• Violations of larceny and possession of stolen property were issued late Tuesday night against Justin Michael Kenney, 27, of 137 W. Church St., according to Mount Airy Police Department reports.
