Scholarship Day not a one-shot deal at SCC

DOBSON — Staffers at the Surry Community College Educational Opportunity Center want students and potential students to know they will be there beyond Monday’s Scholarship Application Day on SCC’s Dobson campus.“You never know when an event is held for a first time, but we had someone in line at 8 a.m. ready for us to help them,” said Coordinator of Career Opportunities and Workforce Advancement Erica Smith. “The official start was 9 a.m. and turnout was good with us seeing a lot of foot traffic.”

 

Board punts on courthouse contract

DOBSON — After some discussion on the matter, the Surry County Board of Commissioners decided to take a “wait and see” approach and get more information before taking any action on a plan to provide much-needed improvements to the historic Dobson courthouse.County Facilities Director Don Mitchell told the board during the meeting that his department had been in the process of having the courthouse assessed by Pilot Mountain-based Brite Engineering.

City stalls redevelopment expense

Mount Airy officials have delayed spending as much as $110,000 for an outside entity to help a new redevelopment commission get organized.When tabling action on that expenditure during a meeting Thursday night, the city board of commissioners decided to let members of the fledgling group study proposals submitted by three organizations vying to provide advisory assistance.
