Among all the music and dancing Saturday around the front of the Historic Earle Theater’s stage during the live WPAQ Merry-Go-Round broadcast, a quiet young man in a felt hat calmly carved a fiddle neck. Spelling bee winner, runner-up are best of friends
This year’s winners of the annual Mount Airy Schools District Spelling Bee are the best of competitors and the best of friends. Eleven students gathered in the Mount Airy Middle School auditorium Feb. 7 and after several rounds 9-year-old Hailey Martin nabbed top honors and 10-year old Connor Lindsley was the runner-up. The 11th fundraiser for the shelter was held at Cross Creek Country Club on Friday night and about $50,000 was earned at the auction for the group.</p>

Once again the community has responded to the dream of David Simmons and others, and supported the Shepherd’s House’s 11th dinner and entertainment benefit. The event was held at Cross Creek Country Club and featured a $100 per ticket “Mad Money Drawdown.” According to the Rev. Local residents who were alive 42 years ago likely will remember a tragic incident occurring then, which will be recalled Monday at a program in Mount Airy. It was on the night of Feb. 25, 1971 that Detective Clinton Monroe Boggs was gunned down on the side of U.S. 52 while investigating a stolen vehicle case.
