A new day is dawning?
DOBSON — In an effort to spur what one county official called “a new chapter” in animal welfare in Surry County, the Board of Commissioners is expected to table proposed changes to the county’s animal ordinance Monday night. But officials say they will still allow public comment on the matter, since a public hearing on the proposed changes was placed on the agenda. The action is expected as the board convenes its regularly-scheduled meeti...

Read Across America Day celebrations encourage year-round reading
“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child. You’re never too busy, too cool, or too hot, to pick up a book and share what you’ve got.” This excerpt from the official Read Across America Day poem from the National Education Association (NEA), described events that took place this week all across the county, in schools, libraries, museums and individual homes. March 1 was Read Across America Day, and...

Sheriff says officers working on break-ins
DOBSON — Sheriff Graham Atkinson said that despite the rash of break-ins in the county in recent weeks, law enforcement sees it as more of a cyclical event than an indication of the dire economic climate. “I think people like to blame it on the economy, but the fact is we’ve always had thieves and always will have thieves,” he said. “It just tends to flare up from time to time.” The comments come a day after Atkinson issued press releases...

City officials want to raid savings to cut taxes
Historically, Mount Airy’s commissioners have sometimes been reluctant to take money from city savings to balance the budget, but a majority of those presently serving advocates doing that to ensure a property tax reduction. “Our citizens out there are hurting,” Commissioner Jon Cawley said Thursday afternoon during the last day of a city government planning retreat when goals, including lowering taxes, were set. City Manager Barbara Jones ...

‘Let’s get it done’
If the county chooses to not invest in the proposed Interstates Sewer Project, it could cripple economic development in the district. That was the message delivered by property and business owners Wednesday, who gathered at Brintle’s Truck Stop to plead for investment in the project. “We need this sewer system out here,” said Tommy Brintle, owner of the truck stop that employs about 75 people. Brintle said his business is dumping wastew...
