Woman jailed, charged with stealing police car
An apparent joyride in a city police car has landed a Mount Airy woman in the Surry County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond. A Mount Airy woman who fell asleep and left her young child unattended — who then wandered into the street — has been charged with an abuse violation, according to city police. A disabled veteran of the war in Iraq remained hospitalized Tuesday as a result of a fire that destroyed his home in the Sheltontown community Monday night.
