I am thoroughly convinced that every man, woman and child in the private sector could lose their jobs right down to babysitting gigs, and there still would be public-paid employees somewhere expecting a cost-of-living raise. While everyone likes to earn as much as they can, that doesn’t mean governmental workers should be oblivious to others in society who not only aren’t getting salary increases but have no jobs at all in many cases. And...

Creating Successful Learners students recognized
One theme running throughout the Creating Successful Learners Awards Program Thursday at the L. H. Furnishing a home from yard sales
Look at the Friday and Saturday newspapers from the past few weeks and turn to the classified section. What do you notice, in increasing quantities? Yard Sale ads! It’s that season again — yard sale time. I have to admit that yard sales are one of my favorite pursuits for the spring and summer months. I love looking at the Friday paper and highlighting the yard sales that I want to visit, then I go online to look up the locations of eac...

Kelly Epperson, owner of Mount Airy radio station WPAQ, receives a certification of appreciation from Mayor Deborah Cochran during Thursday afternoon’s city commissioners meeting. It was given as part of an ongoing campaign by Mount Airy officials to recognize older local businesses. The late Ralph Epperson, Kelly’s father, launched the station in 1948 and it has made a unique contribution to the broadcasting and preservation of traditional Blue Ridge Mountain music. Kelly mentioned that his father, who died in 2006, was an “Ararat, Va., farm boy” who hitchhiked to Arkansas to learn how to become a radio engineer. The station recently celebrated its 65th anniversary.

The board unanimously approved a rezoning request for a 5.4-acre site at 191 West Virginia St. in the Toast community.
