The late Ralph Epperson, Kelly’s father, launched the station in 1948 and it has made a unique contribution to the broadcasting and preservation of traditional Blue Ridge Mountain music. Kelly mentioned that his father, who died in 2006, was an “Ararat, Va., farm boy” who hitchhiked to Arkansas to learn how to become a radio engineer.
