PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Surry Runnin’ Patriots girls basketball team edged out a close win over the Blue Ridge Panthers by a score of 49-42 on Tuesday at the Armfield Civic Center.
Surry Runnin’ Patriots Coach Todd Hill said the team outscored the Panthers by a score of 15-3 in the first quarter then went into half-time tied 17-all.
Hill said the Patriot team did not “fill in the gaps” in the first half. He said later the Patriots made the kind of “reads” necessary to force the tempo in the ballgame against the Panthers and pull out the win.
The coach said the Pats did get into foul trouble in the third quarter. As a result, they brought in rotations from the bench, said Hill. The third quarter ended with the Patriots girls barely ahead of the Panthers by a score of 25-24.
Hill said, “We turned the defensive wick back up in the fourth, and we got up and down the floor.”
The coach said spreading the offense out on the floor and getting to the rim helped bring the 24-point fourth-quarter high.
The Surry Runnin’ Patriots top scorer was Sydney Bedsaul with 15 points.
Also for the Patriots, Jessica Boyd scored 12, Kaylee Paris 11, and Joye Harrison added six. Camille Fishel and Ashley Marshall each scored two. Emily Marshall had one.
