Emergency responders are still on the scene of a three-car pile-up that resulted in three people being transported to the hospital, one in critical condition, according to county Emergency Services Director John Shelton.
According to Shelton, the accident happened just before 8:30 this morning on Highway 89 near its intersection with Race Track Road.
While few details are available, Shelton said the accident involved a head-on collision.
“From what we understand at this point, vehicles were traveling east and west on the highway and collided with each other when one crossed the center land and glanced off the other,” he said. “Then a third vehicle struck one of the vehicles involved in the two-car wreck head-on.”
The emergency director said one of the drivers involved in the head-on collision was pinned in his vehicle for more than an hour, as rescuers tried to free him.
“I don’t have his name at this time, but I know the gentleman was 42 years old and has been transported by ground to the Wake Forest Baptist Hospital trauma center in critical but stable condition,” he said.
The other two drivers, described by Shelton as a male and female, ages unknown, were transported to Northern Hospital.
