This year the schools’ volleyball team will host a game against Forsyth Academy at 4 p.m. on Oct. 11 and the soccer game against Carter G. Woodson is scheduled to start at 4:45.

Millennium Charter Academy is hoping to attract more public participation and awareness of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month with its second Annual Pink Out slated for Oct. 11.
Academy Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher Martha Arrington said parents and participants are invited to stay after school on Oct. 11 and enjoy pink athletic competitions. She said the soccer team will once again wear its pink jerseys debuted last year at the pink out and will add pink socks to their wardrobe this year.
She said students, teachers and staff are encouraged to wear pink for the event and will also have an opportunity to purchase pink ribbons or pink treats that include pink lemonade singles to mix with water and pink cookies. All proceeds from the sales go to aid breast cancer research. Ribbons will be sold for one dollar and lemonade singles and cookies will be sold for 50 cents each. The effort also involves members of both student leadership councils at the academy, who will sell the ribbons, cookies and lemonade drink singles.
“The other teams we will play have been encouraged to participate by wearing pink as well,” said Millennium Soccer Coach Cassie Robacker. “Both teams get very excited about participating in this every year. They especially like the new socks.”
Robacker said all proceeds from the sale of lemonade singles, ribbons and cookies as well as a portion of ticket sales will go to the Surry County Cancer Awareness Team. She added that donations will also be accepted. Last year the event raised $358 which the cancer awareness team used to help with cancer screenings.
Robacker said the event was all designed by students. The game schedule this season allowed the volleyball team to also participate in the pink out. She said one of the biggest champions for the pink out is student Elizabeth Campbell.
“We wanted to do something to help out,” explained Campbell. “It just seemed the thing to do because we knew it was cancer awareness month. It’s just a good way to give back to the community,” said Campbell. “It took effort but it seemed that good things just came together. More activities were added as we moved along.”
Campbell said the pink out activities to raise awareness of breast cancer have been good for team morale.
“This has given us a way to work together more to support a good cause,” said Campbell “The way it has come together it flowed on a good note.’
Robacker asked for a show of hands on the soccer team to indicate how many members have a member of their family who battled cancer or know someone who has cancer and 12 of the nineteen members raised their hands.
“We would really like to get as many people as we can to come out and support this great cause,” added Arrington
The Academy volleyball team is scheduled to host a game against Forsyth Academy on the day of the pink out. Starting time for that game is set for 4 p.m. The school’s soccer team is following through on its slogan of Soccer Kicks Cancer by hosting a pink game against Carter G. Woodson. That game is scheduled to begin at 4:45 p.m.
