DOBSON — The Lady Eagles aced the Winston-Salem Prep Lady Phoenix 3-1 Monday night at home.
The total score for the volleyball match ended 25-9, 25-9 and 25-8. The Golden Eagles are 12-2 in the Northwest 1A/2A conference. Their only losses so far are to Alleghany Trojans with a 5-17 record; and rival East Surry Cardinals with a 15-5 record.
Passing, hitting and setting were delivered very well tonight in a team effort with few mistakes, said Golden Eagles Coach Carrie Hutchens.
Hutchens expects her players to serve at least 85 percent in every game. So far they have reached that and in some games above that goal.
Top servers Monday night were: Meagan Hutson, who served 15/16 including five aces; Cassidy Joyner, who served 14/14 including seven aces; Holly Mason, who served a perfect 9/9; Kaitlin Kidd, who served 4/5; Brooke Lewis, who served 4/4; and Kelsey Taylor, who served 2/3.
Aces are nice to have in volleyball, like icing on the cake, but “getting it over the net and in the court” is what counts, said Hutchens. Consistency should be the goal when it comes to serves and perhaps this is why their 85 percent serving record has remained each game.
Brittany Lewis dominated in the kill statistics, recording six. Kaitlin Kidd and Holly Mason both recorded five kills; Kelsey Taylor and Cassidy Joyner recorded four; and Tori Blevins delivered two.
Meagan Hutson led in assists with 10. Holly Mason contributed seven and Kaitlin Kidd had one.
Hutchens said “overall the girls played well” and did not play down to a Lady Phoenix team whose season record is 0-13 overall.
The Golden Eagles are to take no team lightly no matter the what their record reflects, said Hutchens, who later added that she saw improvements taking place in the young Lady Phoenix team.
Surry Central will travel to Bishop McGuinness tonight.
