Surry Central’s Marlee Wilmoth serves in her third-place match with North Surry’s Harriette Blackburn. Wilmoth came from behind to secure a spot in the regional 2A tournament next week.
North Surry retained the singles crown, and Surry Central advances five players to the 2A regional tournament next week.
North’s Sarah Glasco made it two titles in a row with a straight-set win over West Stokes.
Surry Central already had both doubles teams qualify for regionals by making it to the finals. Marlee Wilmoth gave the Lady Eagles a fifth invite with a third-place finish in singles.
Glasco took any potential drama out of the singles championship by winning easily 6-2, 6-2 over Wildcat Leah Shelton.
The third-place match was a repeat of last year with Wilmoth taking on North’s Harriette Blackburn.
Last year Wilmoth won in straight sets, but Blackburn took a close first frame 7-5 Wednesday. After that, however, Wilmoth ran off two 6-1 sets for the win.
“Marlee played one of her best matches of the year,” said Central Coach Dennis Miller. These two girls met twice in the regular season, and Blackburn won both times, he noted.
On Wednesday, Marlee played better than she has been lately and seemed more upbeat on the court.
This was the second hard finish for Blackburn. She had a 3-0 lead on Shelton in the semis before losing 11 straight games. Against Wilmoth, she dropped 12 of the last 14.
In doubles, it was the seniors against their younger teammates as Savannah Wilson and Megan Gillespie faced juniors Mikayla Cox and Kennedy Dockery.
Wilson and Gillespie took the first set 6-2, but Cox and Dockery answered with a 6-2 set of their own.
In the third set, seniors Wilson and Gillespie pulled away for a 6-1 win.
In the third-place match, North’s Chainey Kuykendall and Chantel Davis faced West Stokes’ McKayla Newsome and Abbey Westmoreland.
The Lady Wildcats, who were the top seed coming in, won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
This is the second-straight year that the Eagles have sent a large constituency to the regionals. Last year all six girls (these five and graduated senior Hunter Marion) reached the top three to advance.
“I was really tickled with that,” said Miller. “I told my doubles girls today, ‘Y’all already accomplished what I wanted you to accomplish.’”
The 2A regional tournament begins a week from Friday at 2 p.m. on the campus of Catawba College in Salisbury.
