PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry defeated Elkin 67-57 as players took turns stepping into the spotlight.

Several Cardinals made an impact at different times in this nonconference matchup.

Drew Alley and Tyler Pardue sparked the Cards (8-3) in the first and third quarters. Scott Meredith carried the team through the second quarter, and Seth Brim came back from first-half foul trouble to contribute in the fourth.

Two weeks ago, the Cards lost by 18 when Meredith was on the bench with a dislocated pinkie. Coach Jason Anderson said at the time that other players had to step up and make a difference.

“The Wilkes Central game made it clear that we have to have more than one person who can fill it up,” Anderson said after this game.

Alley scored on three drives in the first quarter and Pardue scored four points as the Cards took a narrow 12-11 lead going into the second period.

Meredith went off for 12 points in the second quarter to keep East in the game as Elkin got on a roll offensively itself.

The Buckin’ Elks were up 25-19 before Meredith sparked the Cards to a 29-27 halftime lead.

Then in the third quarter, it was Alley and Pardue back at it. Alley hit a three-pointer and scored eight points while Pardue had four points inside.

Elkin called a timeout as East Surry built a double-digit lead at 40-29.

Elkin’s Tre King pulled the Elks closer with eight points in a spurt to draw to 49-44 going into the fourth.

Brim picked up two fouls in 10 seconds in the first quarter and scored just one basket in the first three quarters. He scored seven of the Cards’ 18 points in the fourth.

Alley finished with a season-high 23 points to go with six rebounds, six assists and five steals.

“He’s capable of doing that,” Anderson said of Alley’s all-around game. “Even if he isn’t scoring, he can help in other ways.”

Meredith scored 20, Pardue nine, Eli Gilbert four and Devin Benton two.

“This team is not one-dimensional,” the coach said. “Depending on the matchups, we could have somebody different leading every night.”

Gilbert grabbed six boards, and Brim and Pardue had five each.

King led Elkin with 19 points, 14 in the second half.

Forward Sam Lane was held to just seven points, none in the fourth quarter. Chris Hudspeth was held to six points.

Anderson was pleased with the defensive effort on those two scorers.

East Surry hosts North Surry on Friday.
