Joye Harrison of the Surry Runnin’ Patriots led in scoring with 17 points against the High Point Eagles and celebrates by cutting down the nets with the team. The Pats claimed the Triad Conference girls title.
PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Surry Runnin’ Patriot girls clinched the Triad Conference title and celebrated afterwards by cutting down the nets on their home court at the Armfield Civic Center Friday.
The Runnin’ Patriots aced the High Point Home Educators winning 54-41.
The Surry Runnin’ Patriot girls basketball team has won six conference titles in the last six years, said Surry Runnin’ Patriots Head Coach Todd Hill.
The Pats began a little sluggish in the first quarter but came out gunning the ball in the second.
Hill said, “Sometimes in order to score, you’ve got to score.”
He said the team changed the tempo after getting one point behind in the first quarter and set a press against the Eagles.
The Pats began the second quarter down by one point with a score of 11-12 against the Eagles. Then, they went on a three-pointer shooting spree and sank four total in the second quarter. They also consistently hit at the post.
The tempo change and team scoring effort yielded the Patriots a 20 point run against the Eagles by the end of the quarter.
The Pats went into the half leading 31-17 over the Eagles.
The scoring effort for the Runnin’ Patriots was led by Joye Harrison. She commanded the Patriot offense with 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.
Hill said Harrison was within one assist of getting a triple double in the conference win.
“She distributed the ball really well.”
Patriot Sydney Bedsaul scored the team’s second highest number and pounded in 14 points with four assists.
Also scoring for the Patriots were: Kaylee Paris hitting nine points, Jessica Boyd tossed in eight along with three steals. Camille Fishel floated in six.
Eagle Amanda Yates scored the game high of 20 points. Yates sank six three-point baskets.
The Surry Runnin’ Patriots are 19-4 overall and will be first seed in the regional basketball playoffs in February, said Hill.
“This means that bigger things are ahead for us,” said Hill.
