PILOT MOUNTAIN — The East Surry Cardinal girls won against the Starmount Rams and marked on the score books that center, Keri Fulp, a senior, broke the 1,000-point scoring mark against the Rams.
The Cards won against the Rams on Wednesday by a score of 74-65, and Keri Fulp was the game-high scorer with 25 points.
Fulp came into the game with 997 points after playing four years as an East Surry Cardinal. The last Lady Cardinal to reach the 1,000-point mark was Kelsey Long.
Long graduated in 2010 from East Surry and received a scholarship from Belmont Abbey College, where she is playing basketball. Long is the daughter of East Surry Assistant Principal Brent Long and wife, Carmen Long, of Pilot Mountain.
Fulp is the second Lady Cardinal to receive a basketball scholarship in the last three years. Fulp recently signed for a full scholarship to play basketball for Wake Forest University.
Cardinals Head Coach Keith Gunter said Fulp broke the 1,000 mark after she hit two baskets in a row for the Lady Cards at the opening of the first quarter.
Gunter said, “She has worked hard for it.”
The East Surry coach said against the Rams team on Wednesday, “We were able to do what we wanted to do on offense.” In particular, Gunter said, Sydney Mosley, Gabi Jessup and Fulp were “on their game offensively.”
Cardinal points scored were: Keri Fulp 25, Gabbi Jessup 21, Sydney Mosley 12, Karli Fulp 5, Sydney Marion 5, Kacie Markle 2, Laken Bowman 2, Lauren Thompson 1 and Emma Slater 1.
Starmount’s Heaven Walters scored the most points for the Rams, contributing 23 total.
