Mount Airy’s Carlos Carrillo sent a pass into the box, but Alexis Alvarez (13) couldn’t reach the ball to tap it in against the West Stokes keeper.
The Granite Bears missed out on some early opportunities to score, then fell 5-2 to West Stokes in soccer.
Mount Airy had the ball in the box on a few early attacks, but either couldn’t reach the passes or couldn’t finish the play.
The Wildcats did capitalize on two chances to take a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.
The Bears drew a foul in the box, and Cristian Maldonado scored on a penalty kick for a 2-1 halftime margin.
Maldonado scored again in the second half off a free kick, but the Cats pulled away to stay undefeated at 9-0-1 in the Northwest Conference.
West Stokes came into the game as the top team in the Northwest, while Mount Airy was the top team in the 1A side of the conference.
“We played well, but they have a lot of weapons to throw at you,” said Coach Will Hurley.
“That number three for them (Matthew Hopper) is just so hard to contain,” said Hurley. If a coach could pair Hopper with North Surry’s number three (Mitchell Midkiff), they’d be unstoppable.
The first time these teams met Sept. 13, Hurley didn’t think the Bears played very well, and they lost badly 6-0.
This time around, the coach thought his team played hard and showed good determination, however, “they’ve gotten a lot better since the last time we played them.”
The defense got really strong play from Carlos Carrillo, Hunter Clawson and Ian Halpern, he said.
With all the physical play, the game got a little out of hand later on, he said, but otherwise it was a well-played game.
