PILOT MOUNTAIN — The East Surry girls softball team won two games soundly on Wednesday against Mount Airy girls during in a doubleheader played at East Surry.

The Lady Cards won the first game by a score of 15-0 and took the second victory, 13-1.

The Cards are now 6-4 overall and moved to 4-3 in the conference after the wins.

Highlights of game one

During the first game of the doubleheader, the Cards scored five runs in the first inning. Brooke Bowman pitched in the game and got in some good change-ups along with a good curve ball.

The Lady Cards scored two runs in the second inning, four in the third, two in the fourth and ended the game on a mercy rule.

Cardinals Head Coach Derrick Hill said some highlights of game one included: Emily Cummings with two base hits, two runs, one walk, and three RBI. Kristen Cummings scored the high of three runs with two RBI. Freshman Serena Pickens hit and scored in the first inning, drove in two, ran very well and also stole a base, said Hill.

Hill said Pickens was moved up from JV because of her speed, aggressiveness, and smart running. Pickens substituted as a pinch runner for Kristen Cummings in the second game.

A highlight in the second inning of game one was a Kelsey Wilson double hit that drove in two runs, said Hill.

In the third inning, Laken Bowman drew a walk in the game with bases loaded, which brought in a run. There were several walks, and a single by Brooke Bowman also drove in a run. A double by Amber Lawson drove in both Kristin Cummings and Emily Cummings.

Another highlight of the fourth inning included an Emily Cummings double that drove in Lauren Sechrist and Brooke Bowman.

The score ended 15-0 East Surry.

Hill said, “Our kids are getting a little better every game. They are getting hits instead of pop-ups.”

Highlights of game two

Katie Hicks pitched for the Lady Bears, and the Bears continued on offense to put the ball into play during the game.

In the first inning, the Bears had a three up and three down to start the game. The Lady Cards then returned the favor with Kristen Cummings pitching for the Cards.

East Surry struck first and got two runs after a hit by Laken Bowman to right center drove in two runs by Serena Pickens (runner for Kristen Cummings) and Amber Lawson in the top of the second. In the bottom of the second, Mount Airy scored their first run, when Breann Bowman got home after hitting a single earlier.

This made the score 2-1 with Cards still up.

Several singles in the third for the Cards paid dividends after Brooke Bowman, Jessica Barker and Kristen Cummings got on base. Bowman scored on Barker’s hit after stealing a base earlier. Kristen Cummings scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelsey Wilson making the score Cards 4-1.

There were no runs in the fourth inning.

Some highlights in the fifth for the Lady Cards included both Kristen Cummings’ and Amber Lawson’s double hits that drove in runners on base. The Cards scored four runs in the inning.

In the sixth, the Cards hammered in five more runs. Kelsey Wilson and Kristen Cummings both doubled, driving in runners, and Jessie Barr also drove in a runner.

The contest ended with the Cardinals victorious 13-1.

Hill said, “Kelsey Martin played good defense at third base.” He also said the Lady Bears played well defensively and had some solid hits in the game against the Cards.

Bears Coach Donald Price said his young mostly freshman team played with a lot of enthusiasm against the Cards and a lot of energy.

Hill said Amy Kunkel did well at catcher behind the plate, while Madison Thomas and Katie Hicks did well at pitching, said Price.

East Surry will host Central Davidson on Friday with a Beat Cancer with a Bat Fundraiser ceremony before the game.
