DOBSON — Zach Wilmoth posted 25 points and 11 boards as Surry Central beat East Wilkes 58-45 Friday.

“It was another grind-it-out win tonight,” said Coach Ken Eiswald.

The Golden Eagles (3-1) didn’t allow a basket in the first six minutes to build an 8-0 lead and led 15-2 until Jared Bryan scored just before the first quarter horn.

The lead reached 20-6 before East Wilkes’ Avery Wallis single-handedly tried to bring the Cards back.

Wallis scored all 19 points for the Cards in the second quarter and 21 of their 23 halftime points.

“Wallis is a player; he’s really elevated his game from last year,” said Eiswald. “We had a really tough time with him.”

Wilmoth answered with 10 first-half points, and Luke Haymore had a three-point play to give the Eagles a 31-23 lead at the break.

Haymore was 4-5 inside the arc and 2-3 at the foul line for 10 points and six boards on the night.

“Luke is going to do us more good down inside,” said the coach. “He can really get to the rim when he wants to. The more he does that, the better we are going to be. … He’ll get his looks outside.”

After Wallis went to the foul line eight times in the second quarter, Eiswald tried switching reserve Kenyon Martin onto the scorer in the third quarter.

“Kenyon stepped up and became the defensive stopper on him,” said the coach. “He showed me something tonight.”

Wallis had just two points as the Eagles added one more point to the halftime lead at 40-31.

“We are playing more guys than ever before,” said Eiswald. Therefore it will take a while for the new guys to get a feel for the offense. The returning players are the ones who have the better feel right now, he said, but in the long run the coaches can just plug a guy in when someone is in foul trouble or injured.

The defense is going to have to carry the team at times when the offense struggles, he said.

The offense did pick up in the fourth quarter as the Eagles posted 18 points to the Cards’ 14.

Brett Mosley made three of four shots off the bench for six points.Colby Chilton and Kirk Needham had four each, and Simeon Bracken and Rocky Collins each hit a three-pointer.

Jake Wilmoth didn’t score, but had three steals and three rebounds.

Wallis finished with 35 points, Bryan added eight and Abram Logan two.

The Eagles travel to Bishop McGuinness on Tuesday.
