North Surry hosted a tri-meet in track and field on Thursday competing with Winston-Salem Prep and East Surry. North Surry boys dominated at first and Prep won in girls.

Two North Surry girls qualified for regionals in the shotput and discus.

Prep took the girl’s competition scoring 65 points, East Surry came in second with 47 points, and North Surry, third with 19 points.

In the boy’s competition, North’s score was 83 points, East was second with 47, and Prep took third with 24.

North Surry only has eight girls total on the team and they made the best of what they had.

Hounds Head Coach Janice Simmons said two of the girls got off to a great start after throwing lengths that qualifed them for regional competition in the shotput and discus.

Lady Hound Alex Cooke won first place in the shotput and threw a personal best of 37 feet 4 3/4 inches. The length makes her a serious contender for winner in regionals for the second year in a row. Cooke won in the event last year during the 2A track and field regional meet at Cuthbertson High School.

Hound Kendra McKeithen also took first place in discus and qualified for regionals with a throw of 92 feet 1/4 inches in the tri-meet.

In the high jump field event, the Cards pulled out a first place win after Alyssa Martin cleared 4-feet 8-inches. Martin also won the 800-meter race.

Prep took second in high jump with 4-feet 6-inches. Prep girls made their presence known in the field by getting first and second in the long jump. The team also took first in the triple jump.

East got a first in the girls 100M hurdles when freshman Priscilla Gosnell of East Surry improved in her steps and dropped seconds in her time, said East Surry Coach Keith Gunter.

The Lady Cards also took a first place in the 3200M relay with Riley Hale timing at 16:53.

Gunter said Eliya Harvey got third in the shotput but only needs 30 more inches to qualify for regionals.

Highlights of boys results

North Surry dominated in the field of boys, taking first place.

Hound Ben Goble took first in the shotput and discus. Ryan March took first in long jump and triple jump.

East got a first by John Dickenson in the high jump and Hound LeShaud Moore took second.

North Surry also took first in the 3200M and 1600M relay. Hound Matthew Mayes took first in the 1600M run and 3200M run.

A highlight for East Surry was Lamar Shuff, who took two firsts in the 100M dash and 200M dash. Cards also took a first in the 400M relay.

Coach Keith Gunter said the Cards’ relay team improved on relay baton exchange this meet and times were better as a result.

Gunter said Shuff has continually improved in sprinting and was impressed with his performance in the meet. He also said Demedrick Hargrave continues to be a force in Cards sprinting.

Simmons said for the Hounds the guys continue to show heart and strength in sprinting and relays. In distance, they have bridged the gap and made up for any lack by their competitive attitudes, said Simmons.

“I think it is awesome that our guys are gaining some confidence that will continue to help them,” she said.

The North Surry team could still use more to sign up and compete in the distance running areas, as well as more membership on the girls squad, said Simmons.

The meet was only the second for the North Surry Greyhounds this season.

Never mind the argument over whether openly gay youths should or should not be allowed to join the Boy Scouts. The fact that they have been permitted to do so, through a vote Thursday by the 1,400 members of Boy Scouts of America, is just another sign of the times. But the bigger issue, in m...
