DOBSON — The Lady Eagles scored early and often to nearly triple up Elkin 78-28 Wednesday night.

Surry Central opened the game with a 20-2 run and ended the game with an 18-2 run.

All 10 Eagles scored, and all five starters were in double figures, led by Sarah Bruce with 18.

Courtney Hegler got the team off to a quick 10-0 start. She scored three times and passed to Tess Dockery for another bucket, accounting for eight of those 10 points.

Elkin called a timeout with 4:50 left in the first. After that, the Lady Elks scored their first basket. Then Surry Central ran off another 10-0 spurt and finished the first quarter up 20-4.

None of the Elkin starters scored in the first quarter.

After the initial flurry, the Lady Elks settled in and put together some points. They outscored the Eagles 12-11 during one stretch before Central finished the first half on a 9-0 run for a 40-14 lead.

Bruce had 11 points by halftime, with Hegler at 10, Dockery eight and Brittany Lewis six.

Cassidy Joyner only attempted one shot in the first half and didn’t score.

In the third quarter, Joyner drove the lane in transition and was scraped down her face. The officials couldn’t see the foul, but the all-conference guard proceeded to score 10 of her 12 points in that third quarter. She also provided eight steals, six assists and three rebounds.

Joyner and Dockery each went 2-2 from downtown, and Brooke Lewis hit a shot off the bench as the Eagles were a perfect 5-5 from three-point range.

Dockery finished with 10 points and three assists.

Hegler flirted with a triple-double with 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Brittany Lewis scored 10, and Bruce posted four rebounds to go with her 18 points.

Off the pine, Marlee Wilmoth provided four points, four rebounds and five steals.

Brooke Lewis had three points and four steals. Kristin Key scored four, Kendra Johnson and Mikayla Cox two each.

Makayla Dimmette led Elkin with eight points, six of those coming in the third quarter.

“This was a good team game,” said Coach Mandy Holt. “I didn’t think we came out as good as we wanted to last week against Wilkes Central.”

The players were better at getting into good defensive stances and playing defense by moving, instead of just reaching, she said.

The Eagles did plenty of reaching, too, but had more steals than fouls.

The Lady Eagles (10-3) have now won five straight games since losing to Northwest Conference leader North Surry.

Central will take Friday off and get back to the conference schedule Tuesday, hosting North Stokes. After a trip to South Stokes next Friday, the Eagles face the top three teams in the conference back-to-back-to-back with Bishop McGuinness, East Surry and North Surry.
