The Mount Airy Bears wrestling team faced off on the mat Friday against the Surry Central Golden Eagles in a county rivalry match, and the Bears came out on top winning by a score of 45-35.

The Bears moved to a 31-12 record after the win, and the Golden Eagles’ loss makes them 29-11.

The Bears came into the match with a recent victory of 82-0 against Atkins High School and a 70-6 victory against North Stokes.

Coach Steve Braune said the Bears team came ready to wrestle against the Golden Eagles.

Bear Coach Michael Bodnar said, “I am ecstatic with the win, and against a quality team like Surry Central, it is always better.”

Andrew Moore’s win at 152 for the Bears brought the score to 24-24 near the halfway mark into the wrestling match. Braune said that win changed the momentum in the match. Bear Dallas Smith then won against Golden Eagle Zach Martin to put the Bears in the lead.

Mount Airy wrestler Moore said he expected a tough match against Snow but finally pulled out the victory after getting his opponent in a bounce off the mat. He then won by a pin with a full nelson, he said.

Moore said, “Mr. B said, we need the six so I got the win for the coaches.”

Golden Eagles Coach Stephen Priddy said, “They wrestled better than us tonight and plain and simple as a whole, they wrestled us better.”

Priddy did not call the loss an upset, but said the loss was disappointing. He said the Golden Eagles won in the previous two meetings against the Bears.

Priddy also said Golden Eagle Wes Brown is on pace to set a single season record for the Golden Eagles. Brown won Friday night and now has a total of 40 wins for the Golden Eagles wrestling team.

The Bears are scheduled to wrestle Tuesday at North Surry, while the Golden Eagles are scheduled to wrestle Bishop McGuinness next Friday in Kernersville.

Results for Friday’s match were given by Bears coach Steve Braune and Golden Eagles coach Stephen Priddy.

A strong budget proposal that meets board promises
