PILOT MOUNTAIN — The East Surry Cardinals varsity girls beat the North Surry Vikings at home on Saturday by a score of 42-23.
Head Coach Keith Gunter said the Cardinals were forcing things in the first half of the basketball game. In the third quarter, the coach said, “We opened up and got more open looks in the perimeter.”
Gunter said North Stokes played hard, scrappy defense but the Cards’ defense stepped up to meet their challenge.
“Emma Slater, Lauren Thompson and Sydney Mosley played good defense and did a good job of containing and contesting their shots on the floor,” said Gunter. Mosley had three steals in the game.
Gunter said Sydney Marion came off the bench and played well on defense and offense.
“It is always good to know that we have depth on the bench,” said Gunter.
He said the Cardinals’ defensive objective of containing the Vikings’ high scorers was met in Saturday’s ballgame.
The coach said the team will be looking to play well on defense and offense and must do so to win during the upcoming tough schedule.
Gunter said the Cards’ line-up will be tough from here on out. The Cards play West Stokes on Monday and then will meet Bishop McGuinness, North Surry and Mount Airy.
The win against the Vikings put the Cardinals 16-4 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
Senior Keri Fulp scored the game high of 14 points and led with 11 rebounds. Gabi Jessup scored eight, Sydney Marion seven, Sydney Mosley four and Emma Slater three.
Laken Bowman scored two points and led with three assists. Kaci Markle and Lauren Thompson scored two each.
