DOBSON — The Lady Eagles beat West Wilkes 4-0 in soccer Monday in sloppy conditions.

Surry Central scored three goals in the first half and posted a shutout for the seventh time in eight games.

The Eagles (8-0, 3-0 Northwest Conference) beat East Surry 3-1 in the second game of the season and has posted six straight shutouts since then.

The squad “has played solid defense for the most part, but the improvements are there to be made,” said Coach Matt Richardson.

The opposition has gotten through the defense a few times, but the Eagles were fortunate that the shots were offline, he noted.

The Eagles beat West Wilkes 3-0 last week in Millers Creek. This time, the Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead just five minutes in.

Kelsey Taylor made a perfect assist to Haylee Harrison, who powered in a shot, according to Richardson.

In the 13th minute, it was Harrison providing an assist to a teammate as Laura Dobbins made it 2-0.

Haylee was on the left and fed it back to Laura, the coach said. Laura hit a shot toward the edge of the goal.

The ball went past the keeper, moving over to cover the net. But the ball hit the post, bounced back and hit the keeper and trickled into the net.

With just a minute left in the first half, the Eagles got a corner kick.

Sarah Bruce sent the ball into the box. Emilee Stanley showed perfect timing and positioning as she moved toward the goal and batted in the pass.

With about 10 minutes left in the game, the Eagles sent a ball from the right corner toward Bruce in the box. The Lady Blackhawks were whistled for a handball, giving Central a penalty kick.

Bruce sent a low shot into the left corner of the net for a 4-0 lead. Neither team scored after that as a hard rain began to fall with seven minutes left.

The Eagles travel to Starmount on Wednesday, then host a conference game with South Stokes on Friday.

The Lady Sauras have looked impressive so far this season, making this a key matchup for supremacy in the Northwest Conference.
