Mount Airy police have identified a man who was fatally injured Tuesday night when struck by a vehicle on West Pine Street (N.C. 89).
James Hubert Barnes, 47, of Mount Airy, was pronounced dead on the scene by Surry County Emergency Medical Service Director John Shelton.
The accident occurred about 6:15 p.m. near the Beasley Street intersection, where Barnes was hit by a 1998 Plymouth Voyager van traveling east on N.C. 89.
Angel Gwyn, 35, of Mount Airy, was the operator of the van as well as its owner, police announced this morning.
The collision remains under investigation, which will include an accident-reconstruction by Senior Patrol Officer Ryan Bennett.
In addition to Mount Airy police, members of the city fire department, Mount Airy Rescue Squad and Surry EMS responded to the scene.
