KING — The East Surry Cardinal varsity girls softball team won its first conference game of the season against the West Stokes Wildcats on the road on Thursday, after defeating the Ledford Panthers Wednesday in the home opener.
The now 2-0 Cards won over the 2-2 Wildcats by a score of 6-2.
The 1A Cardinals started off their season with a comeback win on Wednesday showing depth at all positions and coming from behind to take the win.
Head Coach Derrick Hill said against the Wildcats, the Cards scored two runs in the top of the second, three more in the top of the third, and one in the fourth. He said all six runs seem to come at them at once.
Jessica Barker started as pitcher and threw the entire game.
Hill said, “Barker threw the ball real well tonight. She threw a change up a lot better. It was like a light bulb had gone off for her, when you can throw a change-up, you become a better pitcher.”
Hill also said Amber Lawson once again did a great job behind the plate calling pitches for Barker.
Overall, Hill said the team did a great job of getting the ball in play.
Olivia Sheets hit two doubles, played short stop and did a great job, said Hill. Sheets got the last run for the Cards off Emily Cummings’ base hit in the fourth inning.
Hill said Emily Cummings had another big night with two base hits and one RBI. Her sister, Kristen Cummings, also had a base hit with an RBI.
The coach said Laken Bowman made the play of the game after the Cards had two outs with runners at first and second.
“She doubled in the gap at right centerfield and brought in both runners putting the Cards up 5-0,” Hill said.
Hill said after the play by Bowman, there was the feeling of no return for the Cards and good momentum.
The Wildcats got both scores in the sixth and seventh innings.
Hill said the Cards sent six kids to the plate in the second, seven kids to the plate in the third, six to the plate in the fourth, and brought six to plate in the sixth.
“We are getting a little better every time we play,” said Hill. The coach also said the team will continue to build on improvements.
The Cardinal softball team has four seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and one freshman.
They are scheduled to play Friday against South Stokes in an away game.
